About the project

Pika is a washing machine for cleaning reusable diapers,

that can also analyze the baby's health and nutrition.

The machine work with capsules

purchased with a monthly subscription

My role

Challenges

Washing and storing reusable diapers can get, well...smelly.

Monitor and record your baby's health and nutrition while ensuring he's getting all his nutritional needs.

Making the installation and setup process quick and easy.

Objectives

Installation in 5 simple steps or less.

Refine and summarise health data to be easy to read.

Convert 80% of user subscriptions to be handled on the app.

02

Research

The research was held through user interviews and surveys.

Users in Israel, the USA, and Germany participated.

Intakes

- Parents are excited to get health and nutrition updates for their babies

- A third of potential users have more than one diaper-using baby in their family

- Most reusable diaper users are very environmentally aware

Competitors

Smart diapers

Is a reminder app that learn parents changing habits and reminding them to change

Home connect

Is a smart home device hub that compiles all your devices into one app

Pro9 smart diaper

Is an IoT device that monitors the diaper's humidity values and sends parents an alert when a diaper change is due

Pixie Scientific

Is a humidity-sensitive sticker that changes colors when diapers are full, to indicate change is needed

Problem definition

Using the conclusions from the research phase, I have characterized three personas to represent

the range of end users and defined the basic flows and use cases.

Intakes

- Registration to the system will be done online before ordering the machine.

- the onboarding and setup process design is crucial while we want to avoid an installer coming to the house.

Machine order and installation flow

Represent the user's journey from registration till he gets the machine installed and working

Personas

“Cleaning reusable diapers is not easy.

Its time consuming and never ends”

Gerry Schtaat

Father to 6mo Olivia, Hamburg

“At first, it was hard to understand how to use it, but now I don’t see myself going back ”

Tina Preacher

Mather to 1.2yo Emilia

And 3mo Olive, NYC

“It’s ecological, healthier and way nicer to touch… what’s not to like?...”

Rachel Cohen

Mather to 8mo Arthur, TLV

Ideation

After defining the flows and info that need to be presented,

We had a card-sorting session with the team

to sort the information architecture

Exploring different design solutions,

I have created several prototypes to test out with end users

Detailed design

The final detailed design screens are consistent and clean. Keeping a bold section summary for each at the top,

And detailed info and buttons with a clear hierarchy, at the bottom.

Here are some examples-

Baby health and nutrition screen

Holds all the baby health and nutrition info

clear and easy for the parent to read

Conferring the team's doctor, We came up with three values to represent the baby's health and don't need FDA approval.

Making the data accessible

By having a short and to-the-point data summary,  I made the data simple to understand.

a 'time remaining' dial

The Pika logo spins like a machine drum,

to indicate that washing is in progress

Keeping the screen clear and straightforward in its collapsed state,

It shows the less frequently used machine controls when expanded.

First setup onboarding

On the first install, users go through a simple

three-step onboarding for easy setup and installation

Onboarding 1.png

Invites and explains the user

of what to come

The user chooses the baby

they're washing for

If the user chooses to skip

the process, they'll be asked

to reconsider his choice

Users can choose what details they need to update

Users get positive feedback

on their cooperation

Baby details update pop-up

A few minutes after the machine starts a washing cycle, the user gets

a notification asking if any update to the baby's state

is needed, encouraging him

to update, in order to get

the most accurate health and nutrition analysis

Results

The product is under final development,

The company joined 120 more beta testers for final feedback

before going out for final production

92% converted to manage subscriptions on the app

32% fewer support center calls
for first setups

Users install and setup machines themselves, no technician needed
